Can you be charged state tax for money earned in another state you lived in? -
I lived in PA for 6 months at the beginning of 2005, then moved to Illinois and worked the rest of the year. Today I get a letter from the PA Dept. of Revenue trying to charge me tax on the money I made in Illinois. I did a change of address when I moved to Illinois. Can they do this??|::::|Sounds like you NEED to file a tax return for State of PA. They looked at your IRS filing totals and said Doesn t Match up. You do partial year residence return for both IL and PA. So if you already did IL, and didn t do it as partial year resident, may need to amend that, and you need to file a PA partial year resident return.|::::|Change of address doesn t affect your taxes. Did you file a part-year resident PA return for 2005 and show any income from while you lived in PA? You won t owe tax to PA on your income from IL after you moved there, but if you filed a regular PA return and didn t indicate part year resident, that s what s causing your problem. It can be straightened out, but will take some paperwork. Write to them and explain the situation. If you filed in IL for 2005, send a copy of the IL return, that might help.
