Should i take dance as a career? -
i recently got accepted into a full-time dance course. I am extremely happy because I never thought i would get in bcuz i ve only been doing it for a year and other people competing to get into the course have been doing it for 10 years or more. however, my parents strongly disagree with the decision since they see a dancing career as impractical. The full-time dance course is only for a year and you can choose to extend it or not. They do not thing it is worth the money or time( 1 year) to do the course since time cannot repeat itself. They fail to see me being successful in this career since the majority does not earn enough money to support themselves and am scared that i will struggle later in life to support myself. They do not think that my passion is worth all of these things. however, my point of view is that after the year ,although i may not achieve quot;practicalquot; things from it, rather just quot;personal gainquot;, i will at least have gained some experience which i would never gain if i didn t do it. The reason I want to go full-time is bcuz that is one of the suggested ways to get into a dance career quickly and you do need to train yourself. My parents are asking me to see long-term. I take this as a chance I cannot afford to let go. Basicallly disputes stem from difference of values. They also doubt the professionalism of the place. To me, they may be right but I think this is negligable at this stage since I have a fair bit to go till my skills are to a level where i have to take this into account. Also I am not planning to throw away my university degree. I can defer or change to part-time. Therefore, I will complete my degree eventually so i have quot;back-upquot; lest I quot;reallyquot; fail. Clearly, this is not just a quot;should i go for my dreams or follow my parent s advicequot; decision. The issues in it is for more complex. I value my relationship with my parents but I feel like besides sacrificing other things in life, i seem to have to be sacrificing my relationship with them as well. I would greatly appreciate if I have opinions or questions.|::::|You need to follow your dreams!! This is probably a once in a lifetime opportunity. However, be cautious. You need to make sure the dance school is really a good opportunity. Do other girls that have been through it end up with good careers. Work hard at the dancing but also you could maybe take night courses and finish up your degree. Even if you make it in dance, as you get older you will not be able to continue that career forever and need to have a fallback.|::::|It depends on if you have potential. If you are not good at dancing, then don t take the course. But if you think you could be good and really love it, take the class!!!|::::|id go for it. you could be great but you ll never know if you dont try.|::::|If you want to do it yes! My sister and i took dance lessons since we were 4 and she ended up going to college and studying dance and she now has her own dance school and makes lots of children very happy (and she has lots of money too). And she has a Law degree aswell (which she doesnt use)|::::|Yes - but only if you can afford it. You have to be prepared for the fact that nothing might come of your career as a dancer, getting a job in the entertainment industry is hard enough. My friend spends 6 hours a day practicing the violin and she still doubts whether she will ever be good enough to play in the big orchestras, which is one of the only ways she will ever make a living from playing the violin, apart from teaching of course. But she is talented enough to get accepted into one of the top music conservatories in the country. Yet whether she can ever make a living from her playing remains to be seen. But you should at least give it ago - perhaps you have what it takes to succeed as a dancer but aside from making a living, dancing can offer you so many other things. e.g. a very good level of fitness, a sense of self esteem and achievement, increased confidence. The crux of the matter is whether you can afford the school or not. Unfortunately money counts a lot.|::::|I think it s a wonderful thing that you should follow your heart, because you never know where it ll lead you. But there is one question, you didn t specify what kind of dance you were getting into, what was it? Doing a quick Google search, and you can see that dance instructors make decent money, you could always do that, $40 000 a year ain t bad, you can certainly support yourself on that. http://somethingsyoushouldknow.info/danc... Good luck with whatever you decide.
