Dropping out of college- humanitarian work? -

Ok, so I am considering leaving college- I really do not want to stay at my college for four years and attain a degree. I am from England and moved to the USA for college, but this was more for experience than a degree. I really enjoy learning and acquiring knowledge, it’s not that I don’t feel motivated or am too lazy to work, so I want to stay here for around two years and just take courses of things that interest me rather than worry about meeting requirements in order to graduate. I originally chose to major in creative writing but there are so many requirements my school demands to have a degree that many people end up being here an extra year and I think it will not be worth all the time and money, especially as a degree in creative writing isn’t exactly very prestigious in the academic world. I do not see any job for me that will require a degree… I want to travel, do humanitarian work and just small jobs and earn money to fund my desires and volunteer work. I just am looking for some advice on what I should do, I have spent the last hour or so reading about life without a degree and I know there are some success stories although most of these seem to be about starting businesses or in IT which do not interest me at all, my main interests are travelling, writing, art, philosophy, things like that. I want to be able to look at myself and know I followed my heart and did what I wanted, rather than jumped through a hoop because everyone else was doing it… I’m sure if I build up good references from teachers, jobs and volunteer work as I progress through life my life wouldn’t be too awful, but maybe I’m just dreaming. I feel, especially if I choose to be a writer, that a life with wonderful experiences is more beneficial than a life with a degree. Thank you, sorry for being so long, and any help, advice or opinions will be really helpful! |::::|Bad idea. Volunteer work is just that volunteer - as in no pay, how can you survive on that, better think twice.|::::|Good- someone who is following their passion. If your passion does not require a degree- go for it. But education is security to fall back on. Also, consider online education and you can also enjoy volunteering and working on your education when you feel like it. Bless you and thank you- good luck!
